Nintendo Switch 2 Continues Dominant Sales, Original Switch Becomes All-Time Best-Seller

Nintendo has reported a highly successful fiscal year ending March 2026, with its new console, the Switch 2, exceeding all expectations and its predecessor, the original Nintendo Switch, achieving a monumental sales milestone. The Switch 2 has sold an impressive 17.37 million units by December 31, 2025, with a remarkable 7.01 million units sold during the holiday quarter alone. This rapid adoption has positioned the Switch 2 as the fastest-selling console in history, surpassing the Nintendo Wii U's sales in a significantly shorter timeframe.

In a historic achievement, the original Nintendo Switch has officially become Nintendo's best-selling console of all time, surpassing the 154.02 million units sold by the Nintendo DS. As of December 31, 2025, the Switch had sold a total of 155.37 million units, solidifying its place in gaming history. This remarkable longevity is further underscored by its continued sales, with 1.36 million units sold in its ninth holiday season. While the Switch 2's lower profit margin has impacted gross profit margins, the overall increase in net sales has driven significant revenue growth for Nintendo.

The success of both consoles has been bolstered by a strong software lineup. For the Switch 2, titles like "Mario Kart World" and "Donkey Kong Bananza" have already garnered significant sales, with "Mario Kart World" reaching 14.03 million units sold. On the original Switch, "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" remains the best-selling game, with its lifetime sales reaching 70.59 million units. New releases such as "Pokemon Legends Z-A" have also performed exceptionally well, selling 12.3 million copies, with a substantial portion coming from digital downloads.

Looking ahead, Nintendo has a packed release schedule for the Switch 2 in 2026, with a variety of anticipated titles. Upcoming games include "Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" (March 26), "Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection" (March 27), and "Pragmata" (April 24). The company also has a number of titles slated for later in the year, including "Final Fantasy VII Rebirth" (June 3) and "Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition" (April 16). This robust pipeline suggests continued strong performance for the Switch 2.

Despite the overwhelming sales success, Nintendo's stock price experienced a notable drop of over 11% following the release of its financial report. This dip has been attributed to investor concerns regarding immediate market conditions and rising component prices, although Nintendo's president has assured that these factors will not have an immediate impact on financial performance. Nevertheless, the company's strong sales figures and a promising lineup of upcoming games indicate a positive outlook for Nintendo's continued dominance in the gaming industry.
